The Setting
Cafe du Marche is located on the charming pedestrian only shopping street Rue Cler located in the vicinity of the Eiffel Tower. Rick Steves writes about this glorious two block cobblestone market street where local Parisians shop, and it lives up to his description. Patrons may sit outside in front and around the corner, taking in the street scene as they dine.
The Service
Our waitress was friendly and helpful. When she realized our French skills were limited, she not only gave us a translated menu but offered help in English as well.
The Food
I tried the roast chicken and mashed potatoes and was pleasantly surprised to find the chicken moist and flavorful inside and very crispy on the outside. Our son chose a burger (surprise!) and was quite happy with his selection--a large meat patty on good roll with lettuce and tomato. No fries could be had but the roasted potatoes were even tastier. Our other choice was the lamb shank platter,
which was tender, flavorful, and hearty. We ate lunch here, but I have heard the Cafe is excellent for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or just coffee and a snack.
