-
Rijksmuseum - enormous, world famous art collection, featuring
many of Rembrandt's masterpieces as well as other collections and
masterpieces; the museum, which is housed in a 200 year old
castle-like building, is open but under renovation through 2013
-
Anne Frank Museum
- this museum is housed in the very building containing the 'secret
annex' in which teenager Anne frank, her family, and several others
hid for nearly two years to escape the Nazi persecution of Jews
during the 2nd World War; not only do visitors enter beyond the
bookcase that disguised the stairs to their hiding place, but there
are numerous exhibits, displays, and videos, to accompany the
self-guided tour as well as a museum shop
-
Van Gogh Museum - aside from housing an amazing collection of
Van Gogh's paintings and drawings (organized into 5 periods), this
museum builds understanding of Vincent Van Gogh's work in the
context of his time and his contemporaries; visitors can see
examples of major art that was being produced and how different Van
Gogh's vision and style were, and they can read about how he was
received by these and by the more open-minded impressionists & post
impressionists of that time; I came away from the museum with a much
greater understanding and appreciation for this remarkable painter
-
Jewish
Historical Museum - holding over 13,000 works of art, ceremonial
items, and historical objects--not all of which are on display at
one time--this museum is dedicated to the "religion, culture and
history of the Jews in the Netherlands and its former colonies";
video presentations and innovative displays make this a unique
museum experience; in particular the upper level with display cases
of artifacts from the period of the 2nd World War and the
interactive video screens providing information on specific items
was fascinating
