The Setting
Small store front on Albert Cuyptstraat in the De
Pijp neighborhood just out of the center of Amsterdam. If there
was a complaint it would be that the restaurant is nothing special
inside--a counter to order at and a few diner-like booths going back a
narrow isle. I must point out, however, that this restaurant has a loyal
following--our land lord said it was the best burger place in the city.
And I know my son would be a regular if he lived there!
The Service
Since you order at the counter, there's not much
in the way of service, but the employees were friendly and the service
was pretty quick.
The Menu/The Food
The menu choices are somewhat unique and there
are even good vegetarian options! Let me explain: The meat is
Blonde d'Aquitaine beef. Burger toppings include roasted veggies,
pancetta and tarragon mayonnaise. There is a lamburger made with chorizo
and jalapenos. There is a chicken burger with mango chutney. The tuna
burger has albacore, baby bok choy and wasabi mayo. You can have your
burger on a salad as a meal (no bun). And there's a creamy, delicious
pumpkin burger made with pumpkin & sweet potato, topped with creme
fraishe and gorgonzola. The other vegetarian choice is a goat cheese
burger made with cashews and served with pear chutney. There are other
toppings besides and side dishes like baked potato, corn on cob, and
three salads. Ok so there is another complaint--there were no fries and
this in a country where Vlaamse Frites (or Flemish fries) where
available on practically every block served hot and fresh in paper cones
topped with a variety of sauces. I guess it's just because we Americans
can't imagine burgers without fries.
There was no alcohol but plenty of soda, juice,
milkshakes, and tea.
