  1. Turkey Travel Planner - Author of Lonely Planet and Frommer's travel guides to Turkey, Tom Brosnahan, gives travel tips for would be visitors in an easy-to-read Q & A format; there is even a section on funny stuff, the evil eye, and an amazing assortment of maps and great photos, turkeytravelplanner.com

  2. Turkey Welcomes You - this site offers a breakdown and description of the numerous different regions of Turkey, all of the special interests (such as city guides, monuments, culinary culture, festivals, Holy Lands, etc.), museums (15 listed for Istanbul alone!), helpful visitor facts, visa information, hotel guide, and more, tourismturkey.org

  3. About Turkey - just the section on Turkish Cuisine is enough to warrant a visit to this site--pictures and details including history will get you ready for a taste of what is to come; "Touristic Info" is chock full of information divided into categories and organized by city/region, about-turkey.com

  4. Embassy of the Republic of Turkey - this sight has the necessary official tourist information, but the parts I found most interesting were the photographs and detailed descriptions under "Famous Landmarks," "Did you know that...?" fascinating facts section, and the current news headlines, turkishembassy.org

  5. NYTimes Travel Articles - a good place to start your research and whet your appetite for a trip to Turkey--be warned, however, that you must sign up to gain access to these articles--it takes only a minute or two and does not cost any money, though...travel2.nytimes.com

  6. lonely planet - I enjoyed the image gallery and the "postcards" (notes, warnings, etc. from travelers); the "See" section has a good map; "Money" section is not only about currency but also tipping and availability of ATMs, lonelyplanet.com

  7. The World Factbook - want to pretend to be a spy and tap into your own computer data base on foreign countries? Well, here's your chance; this encyclopedic entry brought to you by the CIA offers a host of information on Turkey: introduction, geography, people government, economy, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues, cia.gov

  8. Istanbul : East Meets West - fabulous photo gallery by photographer Alex Sievers, sievers.nl

  9. All About Turkey - this site houses the links to many other sites (and guide books) regarding every aspect of Turkey, from architecture to travel and from cuisine to language & literature, balsoy.com

  10. Istanbul Delights : A Turkey Travelogue - highlights, lodging, dining out, nightlife, getting there, article by Robert Haru Fisher, frommers.com
