Atmosphere

Very neat and clean outside and inside, Fork's store front is simple and unassuming with striped awnings. Inside, the restaurant has a modern uncluttered look--two rooms, hardwood floors, simple furniture, unframed photos mounted along the wall, dim lighting.

Service

Professionally dressed waitress and waiter offer suggestions and descriptions of the specialties. Not overly friendly. We didn't have to wait long for each course, but we were able to relax and chat and didn't feel rushed out even though our meal ended toward the end of the night.

Food

The chef, Jonathan Kosorek, is very creative and the food is artfully presented. They say their cuisine is 'firmly rooted' in the California-French style and that each menu item features local ingredients. Each plate is a sight to behold. Fork used to serve small plates but have revamped their menu. The menu is now set up with small, medium, and large plates, the first two of which are more like appetizers. For starters we tried several orders of the Grilled Monterey Sardines cooked with lemon, thyme, and arbequina olive oil. They were interesting, but for me sardines have too strong of a flavor and too many tiny bones (even though they are edible). For our main course we tried the seared scallops--two giant scallops prepared expertly and presented in sauce with fresh garnish of cress. Another delicious selection was the California Spring Lamb Chops with fiddlehead fern ravioli--one of our party was an expert on fiddleheads and said they were just right!

There is a big (and I've heard quite good wine list). Not being an expert we went with a recommendation and had an excellent Spanish red wine, so good that we had a second bottle!

For dessert the apple-cinnamon bread pudding with caramel whipped cream was very nice--gourmet comfort food.

Fork is among the group of the most expensive restaurants I've had the pleasure to dine in. It is very chic, very good, and has a unique menu--definitely top shelf.
