Atmosphere

Panera is a new restaurant accessed from the outside of the recently redesigned Northgate Mall.  It is modern and inviting--kind of like an upscale, full service coffee shop.  Big panels of menu items hang above the counter in front of the kitchen and there is a lot to choose from. On several occasions I have tried the 2 item combo for lunch. At least at lunchtime the restaurant is always busy. The attitude of the servers behind the counter is pleasant. Free wireless is a bonus; I noticed single diners working away on their laptops.

Food

When you order the "You Pick 2" special you choose between a number of soups, salads, and sandwiches.  I have tried the black bean soup--a hearty, healthy version that is good comfort food. Several soups are low-fat. The grilled chicken Caesar salad was topped with Asiago cheese croutons and served with a small French baguette. A friend had the Fuji Apple salad and said it was delightful. It had dried apple chips on the mixed greens! Sandwiches include hot paninis, a Mediterranean veggie option, and a number of gourmet sounding combinations. They're known for their breads and pastries, so I guess I'll have to go back for breakfast or coffee to get the full picture!
