Atmosphere

There is a small, old shopping center set sideways off of Tamalpais Drive not far past the mall. In it is the non descript storefront of Tub-Tim Thai. Without the guiding light of the Entertainment Book this restaurant would be easily missed. Tub-Tim Thai, once a local favorite, according to my sources, had fallen out of favor. Never having found any Thai meal to be bad, we decided to try it for ourselves. The dining room is a long narrow T shaped room and the decor is decidedly dated: gold framed posters of Thailand, maroon indoor-outdoor carpet, metal & vinyl cafeteria chairs, fake ficus  trees, large painted fans, etc. Each table, however, had a live orchid, which was very pretty.

Service

Our service was good, the waitress young and inexperienced but nice, the host very soft spoken and friendly.  Food was prepared quickly, but in our case since the chicken was undercooked this wasn't a good thing.  Also in 'fixing' the chicken dish I'm pretty sure they just microwaved the whole plate because the same entree returned within 2 minutes steaming!

Food

We shared the fish cake appetizer and found it to be very spongy.  That in and of itself wasn't all bad.  The fried dumplings had scallions mixed in and came with sliced pickled cucumber and chopped peanuts in a sweet/hot sauce. Wondering just how oily they were I discretely squeezed one and positively wrung oil out of it-eek! A cup of nicely seasoned broth containing tiny bits of tofu, grated carrot and lots of fresh cilantro came with the dinner. One entree was a special that night: chicken pumpkin curry was flavorful, including basil in a rich creamy yellow curry.  The pumpkin had been overcooked a bit, though and so the overall texture was mushy instead of chunky. Our other entree was the 5 spice roasted chicken and it was served in a sectioned platter with lettuce, cucumbers, seasoned rice, spiced grilled chicken pieces (1/2 chicken!), and a bit of hot & sour sauce. The chicken, as mentioned above, was uncooked in the center and the skin was rubbery even though some of the spice coating was charred. It had to be sent back to be cooked more. The Singha beers we sipped were the only dependable element of the meal, unfortunately.
