Location and ambiance
Centrally located just off the square in Healdsburg is the
sparkling clean and well stocked Oakville Grocery Co. This is a
gourmet market with a fabulous array of cheeses, good breads, snacks
and spreads of all kinds, wine and other beverages, and an
interesting menu of pizzas and sandwiches. Outside is a patio where
snacks and coffees can be enjoyed alfresco.
Service
Shoppers place a sandwich or pizza order at one counter and get a
bill. They can continue to shop and then pay at the cashier,
getting a receipt with which to pick up their order. The employees
seemed helpful and efficient.
Food
We were so intrigued by the sandwich selections that we
concentrated on these first. The BLT with Avocado had thick
bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on whole wheat. The avocado was
creamy and the bacon made it very hearty. Smoked Turkey & Cranberry
was an interesting combo of savory and sweet on a roll. And the
Roast Beef & Blue was roast beef, red onion, tomato, lettuce and a
salty blue cheese spread which was a perfect accompaniment to the
beef. We didn't know just how delicious the pizzas (there are 12
choices on the menu) looked until it was too late and a steaming pie
was passed over us to its hungry purchaser. Then of course we
couldn't very well leave for a picnic without some local cheeses and
a good loaf of bread. Our favorite cheese was the Humbolt Fog,
a creamy goat cheese with gray line running through the center of
the wedge. It looks like mold, but is actually ash.
