Atmosphere
This is a great local seafood spot--guests may eat in, take out, or buy fresh local seafood from their tiny market. The setting is rustic, which seems perfect for a 'Keys' seafood experience. On the dock you walk up to order at a window and then you go
find a table along the dock, or through the small gift shop to the other side of the restaurant where there are picnic tables on the dock overlooking waters teeming with giant tarpon,
or upstairs to an indoor deck above the docks. Pelicans and other sea birds roost nearby; the view is great fun for kids and adults alike (see the website for photos).
Service
It's a relaxed, fun atmosphere that begins with ordering. Instead of giving a name you'll be asked for your favorite drink or your favorite movie. The people at the window and in the attached fish market are friendly and helpful.
Food
Just about everything we tried was great. Some dishes like 'Our Famous Lobster Reuben' sets this place apart from the average fried seafood joint. A huge, stuffed,
grilled sandwich with lobster meat, coleslaw, and dressing--it was a gourmet treat. The side dishes: delicious garlic smashed new potatoes and crisp steamed veggies or the more traditional sides of fries and coleslaw also set Keys Fisheries apart. The grouper platter was an enormous serving (we had it grilled; patrons can choose fried, grilled, or blackened), and the crab cakes were two fat, crisply breaded and fried cakes very rich in flavor.
The fried shrimp platter has giant butterflied shrimp., The crab cake
sandwich was not as impressive; it contained only a thin patty--more
breading than crab. The cheeseburger was fine (only my son orders a cheeseburger at a seafood restaurant!).
Another dish that wasn't up to par was the calamari appetizer--it was breaded with coarse cornmeal and was greasy with an odd aftertaste. Other specialties are the conch chowder, mahi-mahi, and stone crab claws. They have beer, wine, and a liquor bar, plus key lime pie and various ice creams for dessert.
The key lime pie is reasonably priced ($2.75) and very good. If you are
in the mood for seafood and a relaxed atmosphere, don't miss Keys
Fisheries--diners of all ages will be happy there.
