Atmosphere & Service

Alvin Ord's Sandwich Shop is a true local favorite (since 1983) in the Beaufort/Port Royal environs. Located along the busy, commercial Ribaut Road, it doesn't look like much. It's a small one story building, not much more than a shack, with a covered porch on the front. Don't get your hopes up to be more impressed with what you find inside; it's small (4 or 5 tables and booths), old and a bit run down, and it's usually packed with people waiting to order! The help crowded behind the counter are friendly but busy, so they keep the customers and the orders moving.  I've never seen them make a mistake on an order, either. Some people stay to eat; many  pick up to go orders.

Food

Some say it's the best sandwich in town, and I might agree. Alvin Ord's has a few things going for them.  First, the bread:  fresh baked daily, round mini loaves, in French or whole wheat.  This is very unique and delicious sandwich bread!  It's hard to explain why it's better than a roll or a bun, but it's hearty and tastes homemade.  They also come in 3 sizes (a large is big enough for two of us to share). Second are the cold cuts:  outside of the Northeast or Chicago you have a hard time finding authentic hoagies or Reuben sandwiches with really tasty corned beef or pastrami, but Alvin Ord's has them! The menu is mainly sandwiches, some salads, and a few sides. The combo plate is a sandwich, a bag of chips, and a drink.  While some people choose soda I always go for southern 'sweet tea'. The shop's most famous 'original' sandwich is "The Salvation"--this is in keeping with their mascot, a chubby Friar with a tray of fresh bread loaves. It consists of cheddar, mozzarella, and parmesan toasted on the bun; add ham, salami, spiced luncheon meat; dress with lettuce, tomato, onion, and mustard.  My two favorites are the pastrami sandwich or the Reuben (melted Swiss, mozzarella, cheddar, pastrami,  sauerkraut, and spicy mustard--yum!). Other family members like the tuna salad sandwich and the BBQ plate, but I'm sticking with what they do best--that is unless I try the Beaufort Philly (their version of a Philadelphia cheese steak sandwich) next time I'm in town!
