  1. Tassajara Zen Mountain Center - one of three centers that make up the San Francisco Zen Center, founded by Shunryu Suzuki-Roshi in northern California, this center is up in the hills and then down into a deep valley in the wilderness of the Carmel mountains; it is a small village with a Zendo for meditation practice, Japanese style baths fed by hot mineral springs, a dining hall with fabulous vegetarian cuisine, a variety of cabins to accommodate visitors in the summer months, a pool, a beautiful creek that flows through the valley, and hiking trails in the surrounding mountains, sfzc.org/tassajara/ (review)

  2. Green Gulch Farm - another one of three centers that make up the San Francisco Zen Center, founded by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, Green Gulch Farm is located in Marin County just north of SF; they have a program of zen and study as well as an organic farm and garden, japanese tea house, guest house, and conference center, sfzc.org (see article)

  3. Canyon Ranch - in the desert of Tucson, Arizona, the Canyon Ranch is a well known luxury spa with health and fitness services, lots of activities, great service, excellent food (small portions, though), pools, and a big price tag, canyonranch.com (or read a personal review on yahoo.com)

  4. Southwestern Spas - "Discover the Soothing Serenity of the Southwest," by Charis Atlas Heelan features five resorts that are known for pampering their visitors in a variety of ways, frommers.com

  5. "5 Spa Trends, from Wellness to Good Food" - this article, written by Beth J. Harpaz, is about the new focus of spas on wellness rather than just beauty and on really good food, not just healthy menus, (see list of spas mentioned and links at end of article), msn.com
